Products We Dig
Finding the right products and tools can often be an expensive trial by error. It's not uncommon that I will find something completely non-garden related to be the best option. Below you will find garden products and tools;conventional and non-conventional, that we use and why we like them.
Digz Gloves
Gloves can make or break you in the garden. I actually know people who garden without them but my nails will split and tear terribly if I do that. The Digz gloves are form fitting and have a nice thick velcro strapped wrist to keep them from falling off and collecting dirt. That's all great but the real thing for me is the flexibility. I hate being restricted by my glove. This glove has a sturdy leather palm (that's lightly padded) and a moderate neoprene type material over the back of the hand. It's the first glove that doesn't make my hand feel like a clapper in a bell. BONUS: touchscreen finger tips THAT ACTUALLY WORK.
The glove I have pictured here is the only one I have tried but they have an extensive line of gloves I'm very excited to explore.
Epsoma
Epsoma has a collection of organic fertilizers that we use on a regular basis. We find we have stronger rootstock, better bloom and higher yields. It's easy to apply and has clear directions of use for both the hobby gardener and the market producer.
Things to note: There are several varieties, the ones I have pictured are the versions we use most often. The instructions require you to work it into the soil about an inch. This is not absolutely necessary but is a best practice. In my garden, it keeps the dog from eating it.
Additionally, you can find the faster acting liquid forms (not pictured). New to the line are some indoor formulas. Although I work very hard to let nature work out the bugs and fungus, Epsoma has a line of organic solutions for that too.
I honestly haven't found an Epsoma product I don't like.
Vinyl Plant Tape
This product is a fantastic tool for all those climbers, trainees and heavy headed plants. Whether you are growing cucumbers up a trellis or training espaliers along a fence this tape is sturdy, flexible, and long lasting.
The stretchy property of this tape allows you to get a very tight tie down without damaging the plant or hindering it's growth movements.
The soft flexibility does not tear or cut your plant. But don't be deceived by it's gentle nature. This tape means business and has a strong holding power that holds up to sun, wind and fast growing plants.
