To Sow or Not to Sow

7 Reasons to grow your garden from seed.

1.You know how they've been treated

I am gardening organically. Because of that, it's important to me to know exactly what my plants have been fed or exposed to from the very beginning.

2. It's cost effective.

3. You can choose what you grow.

When you grow from seed you can get your favorite varieties instead of being limited to this years chosen market favorite. Additionally, it's easy to find tomato starts but what about romanesco, carrots or pepperoncini? Pictured is a Crackerjack
African Marigold 3-4 feet tall with a 4 inch bloom. I've never seen it available as a start at the garden center.

4. Never Sold Out

Let us assume for a moment that your local garden center has all you favorite varieties! Great! Sadly, they are everyone else favorite too. By the time you get there they are SOLD OUT, better luck next year.

5. Sharing is caring

I always plant more seeds than plants needed...just in case. If I get 100% germination I have seedlings to share (or sell). Anybody need some corn? I have 15 too many.

6. The joy of watching your soil babies grow

There is something indescribably satisfying about harvesting food from a plant you started and kept alive.

7. Transportation

This may seem silly to some, but I drive a 2009 Mini Cooper S. Not exactly pick up truck capacity. Getting my plants can turn into a multi trip event. This year I started 252 plants...picture that in the boot of MINI.
